Raymonda was created by Marius Petipa in 1898 for the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It contains some of his most spectacular choreography and a magnificent score by Alexander Glazunov, full of spirited rhythms and lilting waltzes – George Balanchine called it ‘some of the finest ballet music we have’. Rudolf Nureyev had an intimate knowledge of Raymonda: he performed in the ballet as a young dancer with the Kirov Theatre and staged a full-length version for The Royal Ballet in 1964, reviving many of the dances from memory.
Nureyev presented an adapted version of Act III at Covent Garden in 1969. Against an opulent setting created by Barry Kay, a Hungarian folkdance opens the wedding celebrations for a ballerina and her cavalier. A lively male pas de quatre is followed by the famous grand pas hongrois, which contains ensembles for all 10 dancers, who wear radiant white costumes. Act III of Raymonda was performed as part of a tribute to Nureyev at the Royal Opera House in 2003. -

A ‘‘Danseur Étoile’’ and ballet master, Alexander ‘‘Sasha’’ Kalioujny was born in Prague in 1923 to emigrants Russian parents. After a brilliant carreer in Serge Lifar’s Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, he was appointed ballet teacher at the Nice Conservatoire. In 1970, he was called back to the Opéra by the other ‘‘Étoiles’’ so that he could teach their classes. There, he devised a training highly praised by dancers, focusing on technique, strength and movement mastery. In 1985, Rudolf Nureyev, then Ballet Director, started planning a book based on those classes, but died before he could complete this project. Thirty-five years later, this film aims to be the living memory of his classes, reconstituted by his former students, Danseurs Étoiles Élisabeth Platel and Charles Jude, and performed by the young dancers of the Ballet School of the Opéra national de Paris. A fascinating testimony and an indispensable work tool for all classical dancers around the world.

Swan Lake by Rudolf Nureyev - Behind-the-scenes

From its creation at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1877 to Rudolf Nureyev's version for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1984, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" has undergone various interpretations whilst losing none of its splendour. A poetic dream, the story of an impossible love between an earthly prince and a bird-princess, this timeless work extends the dream beyond dance, probing the human depths and the power of the imagination.
